Since its inception, Intelligent Futures has been committed to honest, authentic conversations that help build communities. In all our engagement projects, we focus on providing creative and convenient ways for people to share their ideas. We use a lot of diverse and customized tactics to make these conversations possible, but one thing never changes — the emphasis on listening that is a priority in all we do.

That’s where the League of Engagement comes in.

Earlier this summer, we began work to assemble a team of city-building enthusiasts who could be part of our engagement sessions. We were looking for dynamic, outgoing and welcoming individuals who were interested in playing a key role in our engagement projects.

“Our goal in building the League of Engagement was to find individuals who could help make great conversations happen within the community,” says Cassandra Caiger, Intelligent Futures’ Engagement and Sustainability Coordinator. “We know that a big part of effective engagement is about the dialogue that takes place. Online offers some great opportunities, but often there is no substitute for a face-to-face conversation where you can have a true exchange of ideas. The League of Engagement is helping make that a reality for more of our clients, and is making a real difference in our ability to tap into the knowledge and expertise of the community.”

All of IF’s seven new League members have undergone customized training around engagement strategies and receive additional training before specific engagement events. Their skills are being deployed in a variety of ways, including conducting on-street interviews, attending community events and facilitating stakeholder workshops. “We benefit from additional eyes and ears at engagement events, and ideally no one from the public is kept waiting to share their thoughts. The members of the League of Engagement benefit from a chance to learn first-hand what works best in community engagement,” Cassandra adds. As a citizen of Calgary, I’ve always wanted to be part of an organization that truly cares about the communities it lives and works in. Intelligent Futures is one of those organizations; furthering their commitment to building sustainable communities through urban design, planning, and engagement initiatives. As is evident by my multiple degrees, I’ve always had a love for learning and felt as though the League of Engagement would continue to fuel that passion. Helping bridge the gap between community members and neighborhood planning initiatives presents me with an exciting challenge and brings forth a multitude of opportunities that will positively contribute to Calgary as a sustainable urban hub.

Having recently graduated from Concordia University with a degree in Urban Planning, I have spent the past year writing my honours thesis on how grassroots movements have reshaped the former working-class neighbourhood of Saint-Henri in Montréal. As a true people-person, I quickly became passionate about how public engagement ensures more informed decision-making and provides a more consensual approach to urban planning and design. I am currently pursuing a Master’s Degree at the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Environmental Design, and has proudly joined IF’s League of Engagement to pursue my passion for people. I am fluent in English and French and also speak Spanish, Arabic and have taken an introductory course in Mandarin Chinese.

I am excited about the opportunity to work with Intelligent Futures as part of the League of Engagement. I am an engaged citizen of Calgary who stays informed about the different projects and developments which are going on in our great city. As a BCOMM – Real Estate and Housing graduate from the University of Guelph, I am currently pursuing my passion for real estate with Colliers International’s Calgary office. As a member of the league of engagement, I hope to better understand the urban issues that affect the communities in which I work and live. I love communicating with people from all walks of life, and I hope to facilitate more meaningful dialogue with community members on behalf of Intelligent Futures.

I’m always looking for ways to engage the disengaged, and the League of Engagement presented a unique opportunity to start conversation with various groups in many different situations. Through the use of both conventional and unconventional methods, the League is the first step in creating better spaces and places for all. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of that!
