university of calgary urban studies -
planning the canadian city

january 2008-april 2011

Along with colleague Chris Elkey, John Lewis has been teaching Urban Studies 451 - Planning the Canadian City - in the University of Calgary’s Urban Studies program.  Using a combination of project work, varied guest speakers and reflections on their own practices, John and Chris challenge students to critically understand the many elements that influence cities.

“As a member of the course and as one of John’s students I can say without a shadow of doubt that it was my favourite course in my 4 years of University. John’s teaching philosophy made students think differently and gave them an in depth understanding of the complexities of city-building in an exciting, easy to learn fashion. I have talked with many students who said they became engaged in Calgary’s political planning processes by means of joining student organizations or speaking at city council meetings after taking John’s course.”
