COMMENT

The Grande Prairie Downtown Streetscape and Infrastructure Assessment and Rehabilitation Project involved a detailed analysis of the surface and sub surface conditions of all the streets within Downtown Grande Prairie. Since many of these roads and the infrastructure underneath are approaching the end of their lifecycle and require extensive replacement, this project provided an opportunity to create an enhanced streetscape design. Intelligent Futures worked with Nak Design Strategies as sub-consultants to Morrison Hershfield, to lead the engagement on the streetscape designs for the City of Grande Prairie.

The engagement portion of the streetscape project began with a workshop series for administration, City Council and the Downtown Association. This workshops series extended over 2 phases to understand the strengths and weaknesses of Downtown Grande Prairie as well as the elements essential for a successful downtown. These workshops also resulted in a selection of streetscape option to present to the public through an online survey, with a paper survey complement, to gather feedback from the broader public. Over 1300 people participated in created a final design tailor the unique needs and culture of Grande Prairie. This design was presented to the community at an urban movie night/open house and through a video at the conclusion of the project.

The City of Grande Prairie is now implementing these designs informed by the public over the next few years.
