Strathcona County Urban Agriculture Strategy
2017 Alberta Professional Planners Institute Award of Merit for Comprehensive & Policy Plan.
In 2016, Intelligent Futures and Community Food Lab were commissioned by Strathcona County to develop their Urban Agriculture Strategy. The result is a long-term vision and strategic planning document that will inform urban agriculture policy development and implementation in the County’s nine urban areas. Urban agriculture – the practice of cultivating food in an urban area – was one of several constituent elements identified in the County’s overarching 2015 Agriculture Master Plan. Intelligent Futures and Community Food Lab (Raleigh, NC) mobilized their skill and experience in public engagement, policy development, food systems design, regional planning, and information design to create a sound methodology and effective roadmap for urban agriculture in Strathcona County.
The Urban Agriculture Strategy is a living document, built using a robust framework for action. Progress in each of the document’s seven action areas leads to their own avenues of inquiry. This incremental approach towards the implementation of an urban agriculture strategy increases the likelihood of success by breaking down emerging challenges into manageable pieces.
