Sunnyside Triangle Site
City of Calgary
The Sunnyside Triangle Site Redevelopment Project is a joint initiative of the City of Calgary’s Office of Land Servicing and Housing, and the Planning and Development, and Parks business units to redevelop a City-owned lot adjacent to transit and a major commercial district in Calgary’s Sunnyside neighbourhood.
Since 2012, the site has hosted ContainR, a temporary public art and community space installation that has become much loved by Calgarians. In 2015, the City of Calgary commissioned Intelligent Futures and engagement partner Mistri in late 2015 to design and deliver a two-phase public engagement process in support of the site’s redevelopment for affordable housing.
Phase 1 of the process was an engagement ‘sprint’ that focused on questions surrounding the activities community members would like to see on the site. A number of engagement approaches were used to collect community input including a series of walking tours, an outdoor ‘sounding board’ located on the site, and an online portal. At the conclusion of the first phase, the public engagement process engaged over 170 people and generated 685 different ideas concerning how to integrate community activities into the planned affordable housing development on the site.
